Indiana Downs

Shelby County's newest recreational haven is Indiana Downs. Indiana Downs offers exciting entertainment options for the entire family. The state-of-the-art 140-acre facility features an array of amenities - from standard bred and thoroughbred racing, family activities pavilion, to 78,000 square feet of grandstand space spanning 3 stories. VIP Suites are available for crystal clear viewing of festivities - and are perfect for any special event or party.

The Grandstand Restaurant features distinctive menu options, including classic American to regional specialties. The restaurant can accommodate parties of up to 600 people - perfect for business functions, family gatherings and receptions. Six months of standard bred racing occurs on the one-mile track includes a 7/8 mile turf track - perfect for thoroughbred racing. Thoroughbred racing is high-lighted once a year during week-long festivities geared toward family fun and entertainment. During the off-season, Indiana Downs welcomes a diverse line-up of special events, horse shows and nationally acclaimed entertainment and concerts. Located at I-74 and Fairland Road (Exit 109) - Indiana Downs is also home to simulcast parlors - perfect for viewing horse racing from around the world.

Do you enjoy talking about books? Do your children enjoy reading and being read to? We are the place for you! The library offers children's programs for all ages and adult programs, such as book discussion groups.

The Shelby County Historical Society:
  • Is a not-for-profit organization funded by membership dues, donations, endowments and fundraising events.
  • Collects and preserves artifacts from Shelby County's past.
  • Offers outreach programs to schools and groups, and guided tours by appointment.
  • Has meeting space available.
  • Offers workshops in historically based crafts and activities.
  • Is home to the Bear Paw Quilter's Guild, an organization open to those interested in quilting or learning to quilt.
  • Includes three changing galleries.

Preservation
Thomas A. Hendricks' Cabin, boyhood home of Shelby County's own
U.S. Vice President, located at Shelby County Fairgrounds.

Is home to the Bear Paw Quilter's Guild, an organization open to those interested in quilting or learning to quilt.

Collections
Railroad Model- fun for boys of all ages.
Ruth Kessler Doll House - fun for girls of all ages.

Permanent Exhibits
Streets of Old Shelby is the culmination of a 15-year project completed in 1996. This major exhibit, encompassing 4,215 sq. ft.
creates a cross section of the Shelby County economy and lifestyle, circa 1900-1910, with building fronts and room interiors.
